Britannia Choral Society

Britannia Choral Society

Britannia Choral Society is a thriving mixed choir, 40–50 strong, based in the beautiful town of Dartmouth. It was founded in 1946 by Gerald King, Director of Music at the Royal Naval College, and the choir originally consisted of cadets and staff of the College supplemented by a few local civilians. The collaboration between town and college continued well into the 1980s, when changes within the college resulted in the choir becoming the self-supporting, independent society it remains today. We normally present two concerts each year: one in December and one in March or April.

Our present musical director, Robin Stubbs, began his musical education at Chester Cathedral and continued his studies in Manchester and London. He has had a busy and diverse career, with a focus on teaching, choral directing and organ playing. Robin is currently Director of Music at Plymouth College Preparatory School and at St Mary Magdalene, Launceston. Community singing has always been at the centre of his music-making, inspiring choral groups with his fast-moving, dynamic rehearsal style.
