Brixham Theatre/The Great Gale of Brixham 1866/131219

The Great Gale of Brixham 1866
In January 1866, a freak easterly storm came up, destroying much of the towns fishing fleet, and other shipping in the Channel. The women of the town, and the few men on shore, came together in a struggle to save whatever they could from the storm, lighting a fire of household possessions on the breakwater to try to guide any surviving ships to safety. The story is told through the eyes of historical residents of the town – the vast majority of characters in the story, were real people living in Brixham at the time.
