The foundations of the church date from Saxon times, while the fabric around the High Altar, the double lancet window overlooking the altar, the two sandstone pillars nearest the East end and the Font date from Norman times.
The tower was built between 1327 and 1369 by Bishop Grandisson, with the upper section being added 1420.
Some of the Roof Bosses set in Wagon roof of the nave are mediaeval, including three rabbits and a Medusa, while the grooves in the exterior north east walls of the High Altar by the north chancel door are where mediaeval archers sharpened their arrows.
