The George Inn

The George Inn

There has been a Public Ale house on the site of the George Inn since St. Michael’s Church was built in the 14th Century.

As with many Devon villages, prosperous from the wool trade in the 13th century, the pub provided accommodation for the workers that came in to build the church. Like “The George”, many pubs were built on land originally owned by the Church, hence the high number of “Church House Inns” in and around Devon.

Renamed “The George Inn” during the reign of George III, it was later rebuilt after a fire in 1939. The pub was also a rallying point for the forced evacuation of the parish in WWII.

After the war, the pub became a popular local venue for many celebrations and meetings in the first-floor assembly rooms. After the village hall was opened in 1981, the need for the assembly rooms was greatly diminished, and when Heavitree Brewery later sold the pub for redevelopment, half the building was sold off as houses and the first floor was reconfigured into five en-suite guest rooms. These now provide comfortable 3-star accommodation for the many and varied visitors to Blackawton.

Please note: we are closed between 3:00pm and 5:00pm between Monday and Saturday, and from 3:30pm till 5:00pm on Sunday.
