St Edmund King and Martyr

St Edmund King and Martyr

The Grade I listed parish church standing near the centre of town is of cruciform plan with transepts, north and south aisles to nave, chancel aisles and two-storey south porch. The C13 tower remains, while on the western side is a cruciform building of stone, erected previous to the year 1310.

The church was rebuilt and dedicated 1414, chiefly in the Early English and Perpendicular styles. The central tower is topped by a spire containing eight bells that were rehung in 1877. The aisles were added in the 15th century, forming chapels on either side of the chancel.

The church itself was restored and extended 1849 and 1896.
